Overview

Course Number: 6000207868

This course gives agents a practical, start-to-finish roadmap for advising clients who are launching, growing, or exiting a small business—using a real-world roofing contractor case study to keep it relatable and easy to apply. You’ll learn how business structure decisions and the 2017 tax law impact planning, how to review current coverage, and how to recommend the right commercial solution (BOP vs. CPP) with the proper liability, property, and umbrella layers. The course also tackles the realities agents hear every day—cash-flow stress, finding customers, hiring subs vs. employees, and adding benefits and retirement strategies as the business grows. Agents walk away with clear talking points, checklists, and coverage guidance they can use immediately with new-business and expanding-business clients.

This course is approved by the South Carolina Department of Insurance for Continuing Insurance Education Credit.

Course Objectives

  1. Evaluate a new-business client’s situation (business structure, operations, vehicles, location, and hiring plans like subs vs. employees) to identify the most urgent property, liability, and regulatory insurance exposures during startup.
  2. Explain how business structure choices (sole prop/partnership/corp/LLC/S-corp concepts) and the practical effects of the 2017 tax law can influence risk, paperwork, and insurance planning—while staying within an agent’s role and referring tax/legal decisions to the proper advisors.
  1. Recommend appropriate insurance solutions by reviewing existing coverage and matching needs to the right package (BOP vs. CPP), then layering in auto, contractors’ risk/inland marine, umbrella liability, and other coverages as the business expands.
  2. Guide clients through growth and exit planning by addressing employee risk and benefits decisions (health/retirement strategies as the team grows) and introducing transition tools such as succession planning and buy-sell concepts to help owners retire on their own terms.
